Diamonds for gem use are colourless in general, but some stones with bright colours are highly valued as fancy colour diamonds. The body colour of diamond depends on the concentration of nitrogen and the form of aggregation. Structural defects and vacancy bonding may also cause colour centres. Furthermore, plastic deformation may bring about colour. Recently, artificial colouring to intentionally produce “fancy colour” stones has been carried out in a commercial basis. The combined process of electron beam irradiation with annealing and the high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) process are quite common treatment techniques today.

Electrons are particles possessing a negative electric charge, which is an integral part of every neutral atom. During this process several different effects may occur depending on the material being processed, the dose or amount of treatment that is being applied. These effects include but are not limited to Cross linking, Polymer Degradation, Sterilization, Pasteurization, and Vulcanization. E-Beam differs from other radiation processes in that it is highly controllable, and can be turned completely off with no residual effects.
